What is Intuitive Eating?
Intuitive Eating is a weight-inclusive approach, where regardless of current weight, health can be achieved for all individuals. It was designed by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch in 1995 and revised ever since. There are 10 key principles that help the individual to get to a point where they can listen to their body’s hunger and fullness cues, honor them without judgment and repair their relationship with food and body. I’m very excited to say I have completed my training in Intuitive Eating and will be offering Intuitive Eating in my consultations.
Why I like non-diet methods like Intuitive Eating so much is it doesn’t judge people into categories based on their weight. It allows people of all weights to live in a way where they can be happy and healthy and not feel constantly inadequate and trying to change their weight to fit a specific number range (often damaging their health in the meantime). It doesn’t undermine the fact that someone is a slim body can still get ill, develop type 2 diabetes and other conditions, or the fact that someone with a larger body can be metabolically healthy. I know it’s difficult to understand that a person with higher weight can be healthy – the current, largely accepted belief is that being of a higher weight automatically puts a person at a higher risk of all sorts of diseases. However, there is evidence to suggest the relationship between weight and health is not as linear as we were taught to believe.
Another reason why I like Intuitive Eating is it makes the individual the expert. Their experience, their likes and dislikes, their body’s cues are what is at the core of everything. What I don’t like about diets is that they’re all external to the person. The power and pressure come from someone else, a doctor, personal trainer, etc, and it gets imposed onto the individual. Eventually, when the individual cannot keep up with the requirements, they “fail”, and often in the process lose their trust in their body, their ability to control themselves around food, and gain a disordered relationship with food.
I love empowering people. I want to help people get to a point where they feel good enough, worthy of the space they have in this world and can reject pressures to become anything other than all that they are.
If you feel out of control around food, feel stress and anxiety around certain types of food you deem as “bad”, have a negative body image – book a Discovery Call, and let’s begin unraveling and re-building your approach to it all.
